Layer 4–Food

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation…” 1Pet 2:2)

Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. (Heb 5:11-14)

God has prepared the soil in which our lives have been planted. It is deep soil, rich and full of nutrients. By God’s grace, it has everything we need to nourish our spiritual growth and development. All believers are invited and encouraged to sink their roots into this soil. As we do so, the nutrients that foster spiritual maturity are drawn up into our lives and add stature, strength, and stamina to our Christian walk.

In the physical world, we are all familiar with the five “food groups”: grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and meat. A balanced diet drawn from these food groups will result in physical growth and health.

In the spiritual world there are also five “food groups”—a balanced spiritual diet with which we should all become intimately familiar.

  • Scripture—the word of God found in the Old and New Testaments of our Bible. (“When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight…” Jer 15:16)
  • Christ—a personal relationship with Jesus as Savior and Lord. (“The one who feeds on me will live because of me.” Jn 6:57)
  • Spirit—the living, indwelling presence who guides, comforts, and matures us. (“We were all given the one Spirit to drink.” 1Cor 12:13)
  • Gospel—the simple story that is the power of God to save all who believe (Rom 1:17) and which is the foundational nutrient of our spiritual diet. (“Here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die.” Jn 6:50)
  • Church—the living body of Christ given the responsibility to feed, encourage, support, discipline, and lead people to maturity (“The whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Eph 4:11-13)

Here at North Central, we are committed to giving people simple, consistent access to the FOOD God has provided to help us mature in Christ.
