Re-gospeling:
Capturing the Essential Faith

Synopsis:

Website Gospel GraphicQuestion: Do we know the gospel? Sounds like a simple question. It is certainly an important question. But what is the answer?

The gospel has always been vulnerable to two dangers: the danger of taking away and the danger of adding to. Since New Testament times, there have been those who threw out essential tenets of the gospel (denying, for instance, the incarnation or resurrection). And there have always been those who went beyond the essential gospel (like those who insisted on circumcision and keeping the Law). The Apostles and the early church fought hard battles to keep the Gospel “just right”: neither too fat nor too lean.

Believers today are caught between these same two dangers. Either we try to pile onto the core gospel things that don’t belong there (“Unless you do ____, you can’t be saved!”) or we take essential beliefs away (“Jesus was a good man, but not divine”).

The gospel is under attack in our day, just as in the days of the early church. If we are to protect the essential gospel, we must know what it is! But too many of us do not know. We’ve never thought about what must be included in the gospel (if it is to save us) and what must be excluded (lest it destroy the power of the cross).

This seminar is an exploration of the core gospel. We look at ideas that are central to salvation. We explore what belongs in the gospel and what does not. We learn what—in our own day—threatens the “just right” gospel and tries to make it too fat or too thin. And along the way, we fall in love with the pristine, spare, light-on-its-feet story that alone has the power to save us.
